Cleaning the boat hood with green soap? Do not do it!

Cleaning the boat hood with green soap? Do not do it!

Never clean your boat cover with green soap! Use a cleaner that meets three important requirements.

"Just clean your boat hood with green soap, at least it's safe," says the sailmaker.

This is a tip from grandmother's time. Grandmothers are often right, but not now. Green soap is indeed safe when it comes to discolouration, for example. The fabric will certainly not discolour. It will also not be damaged and sometimes the boat cover remains perfectly watertight.

But do you really want green deposits, weather stains and mould in the canvas again soon?

Green soap has a major disadvantage. It leaves a kind of greasy layer. No matter how well you rinse the boat cover, there is a big chance that some residue remains. You can feel it on your hands. Use green soap and rinse your hands afterwards. They remain greasy to the touch.

A greasy layer, that is exactly what you do not want on your boat cover. The residues of green soap are perfect for fungi, algae and dirt to attach themselves to. Because of this, one often sees that the boat canvas which has been cleaned with green soap, will mould much quicker. Green deposits will appear on the canvas much more quickly. There will be weather spots in the canvas of the boat cover much quicker.

The greasy layer will also make it more difficult to make the boat cover watertight. The impregnating agent clashes with residual soap.

But what is a good boat cover cleaner for general maintenance?

As far as we are concerned, there are 3 important properties that such a product must meet.

1: It should not clash with the impregnation agent

Many tent fabric cleaners that are sold are simply standard cleaners. Marketed by wholesalers. If any of these detergents remain in the fabric, they will interfere with the impregnation agent that is to be applied later. We have made our Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo so that if any residue is left behind in the canvas, it will not clash with the Sprayhood & Tent Protector.

2: It must foam well

There are some tent fabric cleaners on the market that hardly foam at all. This makes you think that it is not in the boat canvas. We have made sure that Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo foams extra. As long as you see foam, you will continue to rinse. This reduces the risk of problems during impregnation.

3: It should be suitable for all types of fabric.

Some tent fabric cleaners work well on a certain type of tent fabric. But they are much too strong for other types of canvas and will really "kick the bucket". With Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo you can safely clean any boat hood. For heavy soiling and deeply penetrated stains, there is always the Power Cleaner.

Protecting, impregnating, coating...even more important than cleaning!

After cleaning, you need to protect the fabric again. Not only to ensure that it remains waterproof, but also to ensure that it does not become dirty so quickly.

We prefer to turn it around! Make sure the canvas of your boat cover is always well protected with a strong impregnating agent or coating. Then the chance of contamination, mould and algae is also a lot smaller. Prevention is better than cure!
