If water is no longer beading off your boat canopy, it's time to waterproof it. The fabric has lost its water-repellent properties through use, weather exposure, and UV radiation. With the right approach, you can fix this yourself at home, without any special equipment. My boat canopy is no longer repelling water – what should I do?
Water that stops beading off is a sign that the fabric's protective layer has deteriorated. The fabric itself is often still in good condition. What you need is a treatment that restores water repellency.
But waterproofing alone isn't enough. A waterproofing agent only works properly on clean fabric. If you apply it to dirty or worn material, it will absorb unevenly and perform poorly. Always follow the 3-step system: clean first, then treat any deeply set stains if needed, and only then apply the waterproofer.
