A fabric convertible roof should be cleaned with a textile-specific product, applied in the right order. This article explains which Ultramar products work — Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo, Fabric Power Cleaner and Sprayhood & Tent Protector — what to avoid, and how to restore colour and water repellency.

Cleaning a Convertible Roof: The Best Product and the Right Method

A fabric convertible roof requires different care than ordinary car paintwork. The wrong approach damages the material and accelerates discolouration. This article shows you which product works, what to avoid, and how to bring back colour and appearance with the right steps.

What is the best product to clean my convertible roof?

A mild, textile-specific cleaner works best for a fabric convertible roof. Ultramar's Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo has been specially developed for outdoor textiles. It removes dirt and stubborn contamination without harming the fabric.

Household cleaning products are not suitable. They contain ingredients that damage the fibres or reduce the water-repellent properties of the fabric. Always use a product designed for outdoor textiles.

Apply the cleaner to a damp roof, work with a soft brush in the direction of the weave, and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow the roof to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Can you put a convertible with a fabric roof through a car wash?

We advise against it. The brushes in an automatic car wash are designed for paintwork, not textiles. They can damage the fabric, pull stitching loose, and wear down the surface coating. High-pressure water jets can have the same effect.

A convertible roof is best cleaned by hand. It may take a little more time, but the results are better and you won't damage the material. A manual approach is also gentle enough for the stitching and the seals around the roof.

Can you use green soap to clean a convertible roof?

Green soap may seem harmless, but it is not the best choice for a fabric convertible roof. It can leave residue in the fabric structure and reduce water repellency. It is also not formulated for the specific fibre types used in convertible roofs.

A cleaner developed specifically for outdoor textiles is a better option. It cleans effectively and leaves no residue that could interfere with subsequent protection.

My convertible roof has gone dull. How do I get the colour back?

A dull or faded appearance is caused by a combination of dirt, UV exposure, and loss of the protective coating. Cleaning helps, but is often not enough when the protection has already deteriorated significantly.

After cleaning, apply the Sprayhood & Tent Protector. This product restores water repellency and gives the fabric a fresh, even appearance. It works best on a clean and completely dry roof.

Spray the protector evenly over the roof and allow it to absorb. You will notice the difference straight away: the surface looks fuller and the colour comes back. Water will bead off cleanly again afterwards.

What if stubborn stains remain after cleaning?

Sometimes stains persist after a standard clean — for example, deep-set discolouration or stubborn contamination on a light-coloured roof. In that case, use the Fabric Power Cleaner as an intermediate step, after cleaning but before protecting.

Apply the product directly to the affected area, allow it to work for a short time, and rinse thoroughly. Then allow the roof to dry completely before applying the protector.

What is the correct order for cleaning a convertible roof?

  1. Clean: apply the Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo to the damp roof, work with a soft brush, and rinse with clean water.
  2. Remove stains (only if necessary): apply the Fabric Power Cleaner directly to stubborn spots, rinse, and allow to dry.
  3. Protect: apply the Sprayhood & Tent Protector to a clean, completely dry roof.

Do not skip step 3. Without protection, dirt penetrates the fabric more quickly and water repellency can be lost after the very first rain shower.

How often should you clean a convertible roof?

It depends on how often you use the car and how long the roof is exposed to the elements. A convertible roof that stays outside all year round needs more maintenance than one kept in a garage. At a minimum, clean the roof at the start and end of the driving season. If you notice that water is no longer beading off properly, that is a sign that protection is needed.

Frequently asked questions about cleaning a convertible roof

Can I use a pressure washer?

We advise against it. A pressure washer can damage the fabric and force water into the seams. Use a garden hose on a low setting or a bucket of clean water.

Should the roof be wet or dry when I start?

Slightly damp is best. First rinse the roof with water to remove loose dirt, then apply the cleaner.

Can I apply the Sprayhood & Tent Protector to a damp roof?

No. Always apply the protector to a completely dry roof. If the surface is damp, it will not absorb properly and the protection will be less effective.

My convertible roof is light grey and shows stains quickly. What can I do?

Light colours show dirt more readily. Regular cleaning helps, and a properly applied protector will prevent dirt from penetrating as easily. After treatment, you can rinse the roof with water in between cleans to stop grime from building up.
