Stubborn stains on a boat cover are best tackled in three steps: cleaning with Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo, treating deep-set stains and stubborn discolouration with Fabric Power Cleaner, and then protecting with Sprayhood & Tent Protector. This article explains how to deal with bird dropping stains, deep-set stains and stubborn discolouration step by step.

Removing Stains from Your Boat Cover: Clean and Protect in 3 Steps

Stubborn stains on a boat cover rarely disappear on their own. Bird dropping stains, deep-set stains and stubborn discolouration all require a targeted approach: clean first, then treat deeply embedded dirt, then protect. Skip a step and you'll often get poorer results — or risk damaging the material. In this article, you'll find out how to tackle every common stain, step by step.

Why Stains on a Boat Cover Are So Stubborn

A boat cover lives outside and catches everything: rain, wind, exhaust fumes, birds and airborne dust. Once the water-repellent layer weakens, that dirt works its way into the fabric structure. A stain that looks fresh may already be deeply embedded. Surface washing won't solve it.

The longer you wait to treat a stain, the harder it becomes to restore the original colour. Acting quickly helps. That said, even older stains can often still be removed with the right product.

How Do I Tackle Deep-Set Stains on the Inside of My Boat Cover?

Deep-set stains on the inside of a boat cover are a common problem. They develop when dirt and moisture are trapped together for a long time. The inside of the cover has little airflow, which allows contaminants to build up in the fabric structure.

Approach:

  1. Spray the affected area generously with Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo and gently scrub with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
  2. If deeply embedded dirt is still visible after cleaning, apply Fabric Power Cleaner directly to that area. Leave it to work for at least 15 minutes, then gently scrub and rinse with clean water.
  3. Allow the cover to dry completely before applying protection.

If you also want to protect the outside of the cover after cleaning, read on to the protection section at the bottom of this article.

How Do I Tackle Stubborn Bird Dropping Stains on My Boat Cover?

Bird droppings are acidic and quickly work their way into the fabric structure. The longer you leave them, the more firmly the stain sets. Remove fresh droppings as soon as possible with a damp cloth. For dried-on stains, a more thorough approach is needed.

Approach:

  1. Loosen the stain by dampening it with water. Leave it to soak in briefly.
  2. Treat the area with Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo. Scrub gently with a brush and rinse off.
  3. If deeply embedded dirt is still visible after cleaning, apply Fabric Power Cleaner directly to that area. Leave it to work for at least 15 minutes. Scrub gently and rinse thoroughly.
  4. Check the result once the fabric is dry. Repeating the treatment can often help with deeply set discolouration.

Always apply Fabric Power Cleaner directly to the stain, not over the entire surface.

How Do I Tackle Stubborn Discolouration on My Boat Cover?

Stubborn discolouration shows up as brown, grey or yellowish patches caused by prolonged exposure to rain, sun and air pollution. It sits deeper than ordinary surface dirt and responds less readily to standard cleaning.

Approach:

  1. Wash the entire surface with Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo. This removes loose dirt and makes any remaining discolouration visible for the next step.
  2. If deeply embedded dirt is still visible after cleaning, apply Fabric Power Cleaner directly to the discoloured areas. Leave it to work for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Scrub gently with a soft brush and rinse off with clean water.
  4. Allow the cover to air-dry completely.

Stubborn discolouration is sometimes the result of years of neglected protection. In that case, it may not be possible to fully restore the cover to its original condition. Even so, the result will often improve noticeably.

What Do You Do After Removing Stains?

After cleaning and treating stains, the fabric's protective layer is largely gone. Without a fresh coat of protection, dirt will work its way back in more quickly. Always apply a protective product once the cover is dry.

For synthetic boat covers (polyester or acrylic), use Sprayhood & Tent Protector. This restores water repellency and helps keep new dirt out of the fabric. Only apply the product to a completely dry cover.

Does your boat cover have clear plastic windows? Treat these separately with the Clear Plastic Cleaner & Protector. Never use a fabric protection product on clear plastic.

Which Product Do You Use for Stains on a Boat Cover?

  • Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo — for general cleaning; always the first step.
  • Fabric Power Cleaner — for deep-set stains and stubborn discolouration that remains visible after cleaning. Apply directly to the affected area; leave for at least 15 minutes.
  • Sprayhood & Tent Protector — to restore water repellency after cleaning. Apply to dry fabric only.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boat Cover Stains

Can I wash a boat cover in the washing machine?

We don't recommend it. Boat covers are large and often not suitable for machine washing. Machine washing also strips the protective layer without giving you the chance to restore it straight away. Hand cleaning gives you more control and reduces the risk of damage.

Does Fabric Power Cleaner work on the inside of the cover?

Yes. The inside is often the hardest area to reach, but you can apply Fabric Power Cleaner directly to deep-set stains and stubborn discolouration. Make sure the area is well ventilated and rinse thoroughly afterwards.

Do I need to treat the entire cover if there's only one stain?

For cleaning, you can work locally, but the result will be more even if you include the whole cover in step 1. Always apply Fabric Power Cleaner directly to the area with remaining dirt. For protection, it's best to cover the entire surface so that water repellency is consistent throughout.

How long should I leave Fabric Power Cleaner to work?

Let the Fabric Power Cleaner soak in for about 15 minutes. Not seeing a difference yet? Leave it on longer, up to about an hour. If the stains still aren't gone, spray on a little more and let it soak again — this way you can safely leave it on for a whole day. Always rinse thoroughly afterwards.

My boat cover has plastic windows. Can I use the same products on them?

No. Plastic windows require a dedicated product: Clear Plastic Cleaner & Protector. Never use a fabric cleaner or fabric protector on clear plastic.
