Setting up and taking down a caravan awning does not have to be stressful. With a bit of preparation, a clear order, and attention to the fabric, you are comfortable and dry much faster. You also help your awning last longer.

Why proper setup and takedown matters

A caravan awning often stays outside for weeks. Sun, wind, and rain all affect the fabric. When you set the awning up tightly and take it down clean and dry, it stays water-repellent for longer and keeps its shape. That prevents problems on your next camping trip.

Setting up your awning: the basics

Modern awnings are much easier to set up than they used to be. Poles are often connected with elastic and fit together logically. Still, a clear approach makes a big difference.

  • Set up the awning once at home. This helps you understand how everything fits.
  • Avoid the lowest spot on the campsite.
  • Choose shade if possible. It is more comfortable and better for the fabric.
  • Arrive during daylight if you can. Setting up is easier and calmer.
  • Store poles and pegs separately so they cannot damage the fabric.

Setting the awning up tight

A tightly set awning flaps less and stays in good shape.

  1. Fully tension the roof poles first.
  2. Set the centre pole to the correct height.
  3. Lower the left and right corner poles.
  4. Then fully tension the ridge poles.
  5. Place the corner poles neatly into the rubber feet.

Tensioning the awning: keeping everything stable

  • Always start on the caravan side.
  • Tension the rear rubber straight down.
  • Pull the outer rubber outward and secure it with a peg.
  • Repeat on the other side.
  • Tension the corner poles at about a 45° angle.
  • Start with the areas around zips.
  • Use a storm strap when the weather is rough.

Setting up a canopy or annex

A canopy or annex adds space without much extra effort.

  • Lay all parts out clearly before you start.
  • Attach the rear section of the roof pole first.
  • Fix the fabric using the eyelet or clips.
  • Zip the annex onto the awning.
  • Guide the frame through the openings near the zips.
  • Always tension starting at the zips.

Flooring in the awning: tiles or carpet?

A good floor keeps your feet dry and the awning cleaner.

  • Awning tiles are sturdy and easy to install.
  • Awning carpet feels softer and more comfortable.

Choose what fits your camping style best. Both options help keep dirt out of the awning.

Taking down and folding your awning

Careful takedown is just as important as proper setup.

  • Clean the awning before folding it.
  • Make sure the fabric is completely dry.
  • Lay the roof on the ground with the inside facing down.
  • Fold the side panels inward.
  • Keep folding until the awning fits into its bag.

This helps prevent damage and keeps the fabric in good condition.

Awning care: the Ultramar 3-step maintenance process

Good care is part of relaxed camping. Ultramar works with a clear 3-step maintenance process for outdoor fabrics.

Step 1 – Cleaning

Remove surface dirt using a dedicated tent cleaner. Never use green soap, vinegar, or household cleaners. These can damage the fabric.

Step 2 – Stain removal

Do you see stubborn discoloration or deeply embedded dirt? Use a stain remover made for outdoor fabric. This step always comes after cleaning and only where needed.

Step 3 – Protection

Once the awning is clean and dry, restore its water-repellent properties with a protector. This helps prevent rain penetration and reduces future dirt buildup.

Ultramar maintenance products are PFAS-free. They are safe for home use and not less effective.

What do you need?

  • Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Shampoo for cleaning
  • Ultramar Power Cleaner for stubborn contamination
  • Ultramar Sprayhood & Tent Protector or Canvas & Cotton Protector, depending on the fabric

Ultramar also offers maintenance bundles that combine these steps. Bundles are often more cost-effective than buying products separately. Use enough product to get even coverage. Running out halfway can affect the final result.

In short

Setting up and taking down your awning becomes easy when you work calmly and respect the fabric. Set it up tight, take it down clean and dry, and maintain it using the correct 3-step process. That way your awning stays comfortable, water-repellent, and ready for your next trip.
